Police arrest 19 after Manchester derby

Police made a total of 19 arrests in connection with the Manchester derby between City and United at Old Trafford.

Of those, three men were arrested at the game on suspicion of throwing chewing gum onto the pitch.

The other 16 were held on suspicion of a variety of offences, including drunk and disorderly behaviour, public order offences, breach of the peace and ticket touting, both before and after the game.

Assistant Chief Constable Neil Wain said: “This was a tense and exciting game and it is now being discussed for all of the right reasons. We are once again grateful to the vast majority of law-abiding fans from both sides for their patience.”

Police said there was no serious disorder in Manchester city centre following the derby game.

Supporters and the public have been praised as two other high-profile football matches were policed in Greater Manchester from 3pm yesterday.

Stockport County hosted Bury in League Two and Rochdale welcomed Sheffield Wednesday to Spotland in League One. There was no trouble reported at either match.
