Greek fans clash after finance crackdown - 26/04/2011
Fans of a football team in northern Greece have clashed with police and supporters of a rival club, following a decision by sporting authorities to relegate clubs with troubled finances.
The new rules imposed during Greece's major financial crisis will see first-division clubs Iraklis and Panionios relegated to the second tier next season if their appeals fail.
The clashes broke out late Tuesday in the center of the northern city of Thessaloniki during a protest march by Iraklis fans, who battled with riot police and supporters of city rival PAOK.
Police used tear gas to disperse rock-throwing youths and officials say several people have been detained, without immediately giving any further details.
