INDIA, 9-12-12 Kolkata DERBY East Bengal - Mohun Bagan
riots:
India’s one of the most fierce derby ended in a sorrow not as Mohun Bagan refused to field their team citing security reasons after their own player Syed Rahim Nabi was hit by a heavy object on the head.
The stage was all set for another big derby with a crowd of over 1 Lakh came to support their respective teams and the atmosphere was no less than electric.
But somewhere in the middle somebody forgot the scripts as things went from bizzare to horrible as first Mohun Bagan’s only performing player Nigerian captain Odafa Okolie was shown marching the orders for arguing and charging on the referee.
What followed that was complete drama as Syed Rahim Nabi was hit on the head by a supporter allegedly from the Mohun Bagan stands(though there are no official reports).India’s most versatile player, Syed Rahim Nabi was immediately rushed to the hospital.
After the half time whistle, when the whole East Bengal team was on the ground, Mohun Bagan refused to join the action citing security concerns. The match had to be called off.
It was a sad to see such a great stage of football being wasted by a minute of madness. Both set of supporters have their own say on this but in the end football was the only looser.
There were also news that fans and even the local police were involved in violence after the match had been called off. This match was an opportunity to show the world what Indian Football is and what it can be but once again Kolkata Derby proved to be a disaster.
