Serbian hooligans threating with mayhem in Split - 02/11/2010

Bands of hooligans from Serbia are threatening to join up with Russian fans and cause mayhem at the upcoming match between Hajduk and Saint Petersburg Zenit in Split.

The Serbian press has warned that members of almost all of Belgrade’s football fanclubs and several nationalist organizations are planning on coming down for the Europa League match scheduled on Thursday to cause trouble. If the police fails to prepare for the possible onslaught, a "great tragedy" could occur, they write.

One of the members of a fanclub told the Belgrade’s tabloid Kurir:

"It is no secret that our Orthodox brothers before going to Croatia will stop by in Belgrade. We expect them today or tomorrow, and then together we are going to Split. I would not want to disclose details, except that there will be enough of us to destroy and burn down the entire city of Split."

The Hajduk’s fans known as Torcida will not likely take this lying down. "Torcida have been getting ready for days to take revenge on Russian hooligans," Serbian media writes.

Less than two weeks ago violence occured as Hajduk was playing in St. Petersburg.
