Football Club St. Gallen 1879 is a Swiss football club based in the city of St. Gallen in the canton of the same name. It was founded in 1879, making it the oldest football club in Switzerland.[citation needed] In 2008, the AFG Arena, located on the west side of town, replaced the Espenmoos ground in the east end.

Brief history
FC St Gallen are the oldest club in Swiss Football history, dating back to 1879. However they have a far less illustrious history than the likes of counterparts Grasshopper Club Zurich, BSC Young Boys, FC Zurich and FC Basel. They have won two Swiss national championship titles in their 131 years and those trophies came in the years of 1903–1904 and the successful 1999–2000 campaign. The 'biggest' years in the history of St. Gallen were from 1999–2001, when the team was sensational Swiss champions in front of other clubs like Grasshoppers and Basel. Marcel Koller (now coach of German outfit Vfl Bochum) formed a new team with fairly unknown players and focussed them on things like team spirit etc. The final standings were much of a shock to those who hadn't give St. Gallen a chance at the beginning of the season. The campaign after that, a 3rd placed finish was all they could muster, and the very brief glory days were all but over.
