Estadio Centenario, Montevideo, Uruguay. The game corresponds to the last match of the group stage of the Copa Libertadores 2011.
Independiente and Peņarol have a historic rivalry due to the numerous clashes they had in different international cups since decades. Addition, it should be noted that Independiente won the Copa Libertadores seven times, making it in the biggest winner of the cup, while Peņarol, who won it in five times, is in third place. That makes them two of the biggest clubs of South America.
This time, Peņarol (in home) was classified in advance to the round of 16 and Independente has been eliminated in the previous match (vs. Liga de Quito), so Peņarol's chairman gave only a small section of the stadium to the visitor fans, sorrounded by the home public and without police custody (in the first leg, in Avellaneda, Argentina, Peņarol fans were heavily guarded by the Argentine police).
The problems began hours before the game in different parts of the city of Montevideo, where they faced groups of fans of both teams. After, the first fans of Independiente who entered to the stadium (a small group) were attacked with stones and seats by Peņarol fans. Independiente's fans responded to attacks in the same way and at one point managed to steal a little Peņarol's flag who was near. Seeing this, the Uruguayan police went into the visitor sector and managed remove to the fans of Independente the flag stolen from the stand of Peņarol, returning it to it's owner. At that time entered La Barra Del Rojo (barra brava of Independiente) to the stadium and incidents continued for several minutes until police managed to calm the situation.
This video, who shows part of what happened, was uploeaded to Youtube by a fan of Peņarol but then remove the audio and deleted it after a few hours. After this, a fan of Nacional (derby of Peņarol) who had saved the video before being deleted, uploaded it again to Youtube (with a different title) and added music to the first minutes. In the minute 2:26 it sees a fan of Independente stealing the flag of Peņarol.
Newspaper article (it's in Spanish and has some errors in the story).
